ServSafe Test

The ServSafe Certification is issued by the National Restaurant Association and helps qualified individuals test and demonstrate their knowledge regarding food safety. This certification is required by most employers and consists of courses and exams in the following categories:

  • Food Manager
  • Food Handler
  • Alcohol Service
  • Allergens
  • Workplace

Each of these categories is a separate certification you can earn. The ServSafe workplace course has no exam at the end; a certificate of completion is awarded at the end of your coursework.

The ServSafe Manager Exam, Servsafe’s main certification, consists of 90 multiple choice questions, 80 of which are scored and 10 of which are pilot questions that do not count for or against you.

The Food Handler Exam is 40 questions long with no time limit. All questions are multiple choice, and candidates must score at or above 75% to pass the test.

There are two Alcohol Service exams: a primary and an advanced version. The primary exam is 40 questions long and requires a score of 75% to pass, while the advanced exam is 70 questions long and requires an 80% to pass.

The Allergens exam is only required to obtain a ServSafe certification in a few states, but it is recommended for everyone to take.
